With the last of the glorious fall colours and daylight saving soon coming to an end, we’re all feeling the shift to shorter daylight hours. Many people struggle with darker emotions and less energy when the days get short. There are ways to boost your system so you don’t feel the loss of sunlight so keenly.
1. Keep to a regular sleep routine. Get up at the same time every day, regardless of your schedule. It helps your body establish a good circadian rhythm so it’s easier to get up on these dark mornings. Time your bedtime accordingly so you get at least 8 hours of sleep.
2. Exercise outdoors (weather permitting!), ideally 45 minutes to an hour at least 5 days a week so your body gets that boost of energy and sunlight.
3. If possible, put in a full spectrum light bulb where you spend the majority of your day, especially if you can’t get outdoors during the daylight.
4. Take a vitamin D supplement.
5. Eat lots of fruits, vegetables and healthy fats, and keep carbs and processed foods to a minimum.
6. Work to keep your relationships healthy at work and home. Unhealthy relationships drain our energy and make life extra hard.
7. Give yourself permission to slow down your pace of living. Nature rests and renews for a season, and so should we.
